Just seeing

Two sixth-formers. Homework at one of their houses. Shoes off at the door. Neither of them calls it what it is.

They toed their shoes off the second the front door clicked shut. School shoes, damp from the walk, left in a heap on the mat. Socks next. Lewis always made guests do it. Tom did not argue. The hall carpet was thin and a bit scratchy under bare soles. The radiator ticked. The house smelled of last night’s tomato sauce and warm dust.

“Mum’s on till eleven,” Lewis said, not looking at him. “We can use the table.”

They dumped bags in the kitchen. Bare feet on cold lino, then back onto carpet when they gave up on the table after four minutes of pretending to open the chemistry book. The sofa was the real destination. Tom felt it in his stomach the whole walk through.

Lewis’s living room was too warm. Muted telly. A mug already on the coffee table. Tom sat. The sofa fabric was old and slightly rough through his school trousers. His bare feet found the edge of the rug, then the cooler wood beyond it. Lewis stood a second too long, ears going pink, then sat too close.

Neither spoke. Tom could smell Lewis’s cheap body spray and, underneath it, the warm smell of him after the walk. His own feet were still cool from the hall. He curled his toes into the rug.

“We don’t have to do anything,” Tom said. His voice came out thin.

“I know.” Lewis swallowed. “I keep thinking about it anyway.”

Tom nodded. His hands found the buttons of his shirt without a proper decision. One, two, three. The air touched the hair on his chest and made him feel stupidly uncovered. The hair there was thick and dark, coarser than the hair on his head, warm against his skin. When he breathed in he caught himself: salt, clean sweat, the faint leftover of this morning’s shower gel trapped in it.

Lewis watched, looked away, watched again. He pulled his tee off in one awkward yank and dropped it behind the sofa. His chest was almost smooth. A thin line of hair ran down from his navel. Goosebumps rose on his arms and across his stomach. Bare feet tucked under him on the sofa, then one foot slid down until his toes brushed Tom’s ankle. Neither moved away from that either.

“Can I?” Lewis asked, meaning the chest. He sounded twelve, which he was not. He was eighteen and terrified.

“Yeah.”

Lewis’s palm landed flat. Warm. A bit damp. Fingers sank into the hair and stopped. Texture first. Springy. Dense in the middle. Softer out toward the sides. He dragged his hand with the grain, then against it. The hair pulled and settled. Tom’s skin jumped. He could feel each fingerprint.

Lewis leaned in. Tom smelled toothpaste and heat off his mouth before the kiss. It was shy. Dry lips. Then Lewis opened a fraction and Tom tasted cold coffee and nerves. A small sound got caught in Lewis’s throat. Tom felt it more than he heard it.

They stayed like that. Lewis’s hand buried in the hair on Tom’s chest like he needed an anchor. Tom’s hand found Lewis’s bare shoulder. Smooth skin, warmer than the room, already a light sheen. Under Tom’s thumb a muscle twitched. Their bare feet had ended up tangled on the rug without either of them planning it. Lewis’s sole was warmer than Tom’s. Soft. A bit damp at the heel.

“This doesn’t make us anything,” Lewis whispered against his mouth.

“I know. Just seeing.”

Lewis nodded, forehead to Tom’s. He kissed lower, clumsy, along the jaw. Stubble rasped. Then his mouth found the hair on Tom’s chest.

Wet heat through it. Tongue flat, then smaller, tasting the skin underneath. Salt. A ghost of soap. The hair went dark and slick where his mouth was. Tom’s stomach pulled in. He could feel each pass as a separate thing: the wet, the drag, the cool air after. Lewis breathed in on purpose, nose in the hair, and made another small sound he probably hated.

Tom’s hand settled on the back of Lewis’s head. Fine hair, damp at the nape, smelling of shampoo and scalp. He kissed it because speaking felt like too much.

Lewis shifted until their thighs pressed. School trousers, wool blend gone soft. The fabric rasped. Under it both of them were hard and trying not to advertise it. Lewis’s hip bumped Tom’s. Bare toes flexed against the rug.

“Is this alright?”

“Yeah. It’s a lot. But yeah.”

The second kiss was less tidy. Tom tasted his own skin on Lewis’s tongue, salt and the faint bitterness of chest hair that had been in his mouth. His stomach dropped. Lewis’s hand slid down through the hair, over Tom’s stomach, and stopped at the belt. Fingers rested on leather and the heat under it.

“We can stop.”

Lewis shook his head once. “I don’t want to stop. I just don’t know what I’m doing.”

“Me neither.”

That helped. Lewis undid the belt like it might snap. The buckle clicked too loud. Zip next. Both of them flinched. Tom got Lewis’s trousers open the same way, knuckles brushing. The first skin below the waist was hot and startling. Lewis gasped into Tom’s shoulder. Tom felt the shape of him, the heat, the way Lewis’s hips jerked once inside the still-on trousers.

Nothing came off the legs. Socks were already gone. Shoes were in the hall. Trousers stayed rucked at the hips. Only what their hands needed was out.

They learned by touching. The smell changed. Skin, a sharper note, the clean-dirty smell of two people who had thought about this for weeks. Lewis’s forehead stayed on Tom’s collarbone. His breath came short and warm through the wet hair on Tom’s chest.

Lewis came first. Face hidden, mouth open against Tom’s chest. Tom felt the whole of him go tight. Hips jerked twice, small, trapped by cloth. Then heat hit Tom’s fingers, sudden and slick. Most of it stayed inside Lewis’s boxers. The cotton went heavy in a patch. Some escaped past the waistband onto Tom’s knuckles, thick, warmer than skin. The smell arrived at once: sharp, wet, private. Tom tasted it on the air if he breathed through his mouth.

Lewis’s fingers clenched in the chest hair hard enough to tug. He shook once and stayed hidden.

“Sorry.”

“Don’t.”

Tom was close himself. Lewis, oversensitive, kept his hand moving inside Tom’s open trousers without looking. The inside of Tom’s boxers was already damp. When he came it was the same: still dressed, still half hidden. Thick pulses. Heat spreading in a small trapped space. Some of it soaked the cotton. Some of it met Lewis’s palm and stayed there. Tom bit the inside of his cheek. His hips lifted once against the trousers and dropped back. His bare feet had gone rigid on the rug and then slack.

For a few seconds they did not move. Breathing. The fabric between them warm and sticky. Tom could feel the cooling patch in his own boxers and the one he had left on Lewis’s hand. The room smelled like them. Chest hair damp. Coffee gone cold on the table. Books on the floor. Two pairs of bare feet still touching.

Lewis looked down at his fingers and went red to the ears.

“It’s in my trousers.”

“Mine too.”

They sat with it. Shy again. Lewis wiped his hand on the inside of his own boxers rather than on the sofa. Considerate. Also grim. Tom almost laughed and did not.

Clothes still on from the waist down. Mess still in them. Shirts gone. Shoes by the door. Eighteen, curious, and not ready to call it anything but seeing.

Lewis’s cheek stayed on Tom’s chest a while longer. His fingers combed the wet hair slowly, mapping it, as if the experiment needed a last piece of data. Outside a car went past. The radiator clicked. Neither of them reached for a shirt. Neither of them put their socks back on.
