The Last Bus to Merrow

Some journeys begin after the timetable ends.

The last bus to Merrow was twelve minutes late and carried only two passengers past the ring road.

Nina sat upstairs at the front, watching sleet stitch the dark fields together. Below, the driver hummed the same four notes. Somewhere behind her, a man turned a page every thirty seconds without ever reaching the end of his book.

When the bus passed Merrow without stopping, neither of them called out.
